- What motivated you to study general surgery and later specialize in the treatment of overweight and obesity?
Obesity is a chronic health condition that poses significant risks, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and reduced quality of life. During my training in general surgery, I worked with many patients who required bariatric surgery, which allowed me to better understand these clinical situations and seek safe, evidence-based ways to help patients manage overweight and obesity. My goal has always been to provide comprehensive care, focused on health and the prevention of complications.
- In your experience, what are the main challenges patients face in the weight loss process, beyond the physical aspect?
The challenges are not only related to losing weight itself, but also to emotional, social, and behavioral factors. Many patients struggle with anxiety, difficulties in organizing their routines, and even prejudice. These barriers make the process more complex and require a multidisciplinary approach that considers not only the body but also mental and social well-being.
- How do you integrate emotional support and habit change into your treatment protocols to ensure sustainable results?
Treatment should always be based on scientific evidence and individualization. In addition to medical care, it is essential to guide gradual changes in eating habits with nutritional support, encourage regular physical activity, and reinforce the importance of psychological support when necessary. This integration increases patient adherence and helps achieve consistent long-term results.
- What medical advances do you believe are revolutionizing the field of weight loss in Brazil?
Currently, we have new medications (such as Tirzepatide) that help control appetite and blood sugar levels, as well as technological tools that allow closer monitoring of patients’ health. All of these advances must be evaluated individually, always respecting medical indications, patient safety, and ethical standards of professional practice.
- If you could leave a message for someone who wants to change their life but hasn’t had the courage to take the first step yet, what would it be?
The first step in taking care of your health should be to seek proper medical guidance. Obesity is a disease that requires specialized and individualized follow-up. Getting accurate information, understanding the risks, and knowing the treatment options are fundamental to starting a safe and responsible change.
